โ€ŒShould I Shoot Grids?

Even when people shoot good grids , unfortunately they rarely correspond to actual shooting distances. Due to the nature of anamorphics (see the section about anamorphic distance), the distortion changes with actual distance and with focus distance, which may change during a shot. Lens grids at the typical

shooting distances are impractically large. Furthermore, with a non-zero anamorphic distance, no single grid is correct.

As a result, grids probably arenโ€™t as helpful as weโ€™d like. A grid may be OK as a fallback, or reference, or for comparatively good lenses, but itโ€™s probably not the answer for complex legacy lenses. We canโ€™t tell you not to shoot them, but we can tell you not to rely on them.
